Finally Getting Some Exercise

Another busy week filled with lesson preparations and homework evaluations. I think I’m starting to realise the Japanese work ethic here – “Live to work”. And that’s why I decided to finally join my local gym yesterday.

I was reluctant at first due to the costs, but I have become bored with sitting at home, feeling lonely and sorry for myself. So I thought it was time to get myself out and look after my health! I made the right decision in joining this month too. I received my first month’s fee at half price!! YIPEEEEEE!!!

I felt so welcomed at this gym. The staff were so accommodating and patient with my lack of Japanese. They even took the time to create a workout menu for which I can refer to during each visit. Even better was meeting all the other gym members, who all wanted to try some English :P I am really looking forward to continuing my regular visits to the gym, and attempting to use more Japanese each time!

This past Saturday, I had to work due to Junior High School Open day. This involved us having Monday’s lessons while parents and Junior High School students watched. I felt as if I was being assessed on my teaching ability!! I certainly hope I left them with a good impression. Thankfully, all the students remained on-task throughout the lesson. I was pleasantly surprised! Usually there are the few who continually muck-up or sleep during class. I actually walked away feeling it was a successful lesson! I wonder if it was because they were being watched….?

On Saturday and Sunday, Soja held a festival called ‘Retro Road’. It is two days where a street uses the traditional housing as small shops to sell antiques and foods. It was rather quaint, and I wish the photographs would do it more justice. I met so many of my students as I explored the road, usually they were dressed in kimonos and geta. It felt nice to be recognized and talked to by the students. I feel that maybe they are not so scared to approach me anymore!

Here is a picture of me with some lovely Japanese women and two of my students. I was served traditional green tea (macha) and a sweet (okashi). They were so interested in where I was from and why I was in Soja. They were such nice people to have met.

And now it’s back to the teaching world. Hopefully, my body will become used to this routine soon! Jya ne!
