A Few Highlights

Again, I apologise for the amount of time between recent blog posts. To tell the truth though, there has not been a lot happening and I find most of my time is spent teaching, grading or planning the next lesson!! #teacherlyf

The remainder of my time I will often fill watching Japanese television and attempt to translate as much as possible! The TV dramas here are very over-dramatic to the point it is totally unrealistic! But, they at least give me a good laugh. I thoroughly enjoy my quiz shows that involve kanji or general knowledge questions – I feel as if I might actually understand these ones!!

This past week has had some major highlights in terms of teaching. I found I had a very enjoyable lesson with my third year class, having them give advice in English about the many cultural ‘shocks’ I have faced while in Japan. We all had a great giggle, more at my expense and my reactions once I had discovered my mistakes! I finished this class feeling super motivated to plan more future lessons.

Last Sunday, was also Okayama’s English Speech Contest. I had two students participating. They had been working very hard in practicing their speed, pronunciation and intonation. I even had a hand in editing their speech and providing advice. It is very daunting to think the teachers rely on your knowledge of the English language to make appropriate changes. However, I do feel as if I’m becoming an English grammar wiz ;)

Unfortunately, both students did not make the final round, but the competition was extremely tough! I did enjoy listening to each student’s message and speech delivery. Some discussed extremely controversial and tough topics, but these were the ones that ‘tugged’ at the heartstrings the most. Hopefully, I can encourage my students from other schools to participate in this event next year. I believe this not only challenges students, but can drastically improve their English communication skills.

In terms of socialisation this past week, I did go for a journey along the Kinojo trail in Soja on Saturday. The Kinojo trail is said to hold the castle of the demon from the Momotaro story. Unfortunately, this is not the original castle, but a reconstruction. Still, it looks quite majestic among the mountains and greenery.

It was a beautiful day, and was clear enough for us to see all of Soja city. It was quite the sight to see.

Sadly, I have received news that there is most likely no gymnastics club that I can train with while I live in Japan. I am thoroughly missing this sport and am in desperate need of a replacement! I am hoping to join my local gym this coming week, where I can participate in boxing and Zumba classes. Maybe I will find a new passion soon enough…

Until next time!!
