Cooking in Japan

Cooking in Japan has been interesting to say the least! Using foreign ingredients and even grocery shopping has been a challenge. Perhaps the biggest was using a very old-fashioned can opener. After repeatedly attempting to open my can of tuna, and on the verge of a breakdown, I had my dad Skype me.

At this stage, the can had been fairly mutilated. However, my dad was able to somehow talk me through how to successfully open the can. By the end, the can was so mutilated it was barely recognisable! I suppose I should have taken more cooking lessons from mum before I thought of living on my own!

I’m still adjusting to cooking for one. The other night I cooked a tuna bake that served three! It’s safe to say, I’m now eating tuna pasta for lunch and dinner for the next few days.

And tonight, I went all traditional Japanese – well the drink anyway! Spaghetti Bolognaise (for two it would seem!) and an ice cold midori. What better way to celebrate a fantastically cooked meal?!

In the meantime, does anyone know where I can purchase a can opener in Japan? Maybe ikea deliver!

Bring on more challenges! - Jya ne!
